Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Wishes for a safe and happy holiday from a newfoundland real estate agentHappy St. Patrick’s Day to all my clients, colleagues, friends and family. May the luck of the Irish be with you, and may you also be sure to be safe and use designated drivers for any parties you might be enjoying!

We take St. Paddy’s pretty seriously here in Newfoundland, because of our historic and cultural ties to Ireland. Over 81% of Newfoundlanders claim Irish ancestry, and the Irish community has survived and flourished here for a long time. You can read more about our unique history here.

Lets Dance for Bella

Fundraising poster for Newfoundland charity

Here’s another break from Newfoundland real estate blogging to encourage you to come to a fundraiser for a little girl named Bella, who has a condition called Frontonasal Dysplasia requiring several past and coming surgeries in Halifax and Toronto.

Her family will be holding a fundraising dance on January 31 at the Royal Canadian Legion on Blackmarsh Road. Come and have a good time, volunteer to help, or donate something to the silent auction – either way, you’ll be really helping a deserving family in your community.

To buy tickets, please call the number on the poster above, and find out more about Bella and ways to help here. I’ll be keeping Bella and her family in my thoughts and prayers and hope you will, too. God bless.

Spreading 12 Days of Holiday Cheer with Hanlon Realty

Newfoundland real estate agents donating to the SPCA

Today was the last day of what has been a really fun way that the staff and real estate agents at Hanlon Realty have come together to help spread holiday cheer. It was our 12 Days of Christmas Pay It Forward event. We pooled our resources, and every day for 12 Days donated $500 to a deserving Newfoundland charity. It was my favourite take on the 12 Days theme yet.

Today’s final recipient is the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or S.P.C.A., which has been operating in Newfoundland since 1888. This organization promotes responsible pet ownership and provides financial assistance for spay and neuter procedures, and of course they rescue injured, homeless, neglected and abused animals, caring for them at their Lady Dunfield Memorial Animal Shelter on RCAF Road. Please consider adopting a rescued animal the next time you’re looking for a pet.

If you’re interested in our charities, in terms of making your own donation or volunteering, please follow the links below. We’ve learned that all these great organization do incredibly worthwhile work in our communities.

Our Pay It Forward Charities:
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals – helping animals in need daily.

The Gathering Place
– providing meals, advocacy, literacy education, and assistance with activities of daily living for men and women in the community.

Community Food Sharing Association
– the pivotal agency for food distribution to the needy in our province.

Bridges to Hope
– never turning an individual away, offering a food pantry, toy-lending library, community kitchen and Christmas Hamper program.

Macmorran Community Centre
– non-profit offering support and resources to members of the surrounding community, including after-school programs, career and employment programs, rental and gym space, public computer and internet access, fitness programs and an outreach house.

Salvation Army Wiseman Centre
– 20-bed facility that provides temporary emergency housing and support to socially displaced homeless individuals.

Naomi Centre
– emergency shelter that offers safe and supportive temporary housing for young women between the ages of 16 and 30.

Marguerite’s Place
– affordable, fully accessible programming and supportive housing in a women-centered environment.

The Soup Kitchen at George Street United Church
– offering a “hot breakfast” every Monday morning for the winter months and providing a hot, nutritious meal to 130 people weekly, this organization has fed over 30,000 people since it opened in 2002.

Virginia Park Elementary Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program
– serves a balanced, nutritious breakfast Monday to Friday.

Holy Cross Junior High Eat Smart Breakfast Program
– providing a warm welcome, and breakfast, for on average one third of the student body every school day.

Planned Parenthood Newfoundland and Labrador
– a community-based, non-profit organization working to provide knowledge and resources in an atmosphere of support and respect, so everyone in the province can make informed choices about sexual health.

When you see a list this long, and see all the crucial work these organizations do, it becomes clear how much need there is on our community. We are so blessed, and especially this time of year it’s good to stop and think about ways to help those less fortunate than us. At Hanlon Realty we hope that our 12 Days of Paying It Forward has helped us spread the joy of giving. God bless the many dedicated volunteers and staff who make these organizations do so much for so many.

As always, if you have any questions about Newfoundland real estate, then I hope you’ll call me at 682-0744. And I hope that you and your family will have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
