Back to School!
The days are getting shorter, the weather’s getting cooler, and now little ones (and not so little ones, too!) are getting ready to go back to school. I hope everyone enjoys this last long weekend of summer, and that everyone has an easy transition to the new year next week.
For many parents, this will be a weekend of shopping and organizing. Try to find time to enjoy the last few days with your kids at home, too. It can be helpful to try to have a ‘run-through’ of getting ready and waking up earlier, to help the real thing go much more smoothly.
Our local communities provide great options for after-school actives that are fun and affordable. Please follow the links to find recreation programs for adults and children in St. John’s, Mount Pearl, Paradise, and CBS.
Some children are excited to get back to school and meet and make friends. But some can be more anxious, and that’s ok. Back to school jitters are normal, and often can be assuaged just by talking to your child and letting him voice his concerns. Let him know it’s natural to feel a little nervous, and that it might take him a little while to adjust, but that you’re confident he’ll be fine. Be helpful and supportive – but of course talk to your child’s teacher or school counselor if you find he is struggling or not adjusting.
I found this great resource of 10 questions to ask your child everyday after school. I imagine these would be helpful for opening the lines of communication with any child, nervous or not.
Of course and unfortunately, these days it’s hard to talk about school without talking about the growing problem of bullying. Thankfully, there’s lots of resources out there to not only help children, but to also help parents recognize the signs and what they can do to help. This site is a great, comprehensive resource to educate yourself more. The Safe and Caring Schools initiative in this province is also very important.
And don’t forget to take care of yourself! Getting your kids ready to go back to school is hectic. Maybe you need to schedule a mani-pedi for yourself on their first day! Whatever your favourite indulgence, make sure your own needs aren’t overlooked in the coming weeks. And good luck to everyone for a safe, healthy and successful school year!
We Have a Winner!
We have a winner! This past month, I have partnered with The Doctor’s House to offer a social media draw for one free night at their glorious Tudor mansion Inn. I knew that my clients would love the opportunity to have such a luxurious getaway.
Thank you to all who entered via Facebook and Twitter. I used a service called Woobox that allowed me to collect the entrants from Facebook, and I manually entered those who entered via Twitter. To selected the winner from our list of over 500, I used a random number generator, then emailed the lucky winner – I was thrilled to let Fiona Rose-Butt know she had won!
A big thank you to Jerry Byrne and Laurelyn Berry, owners of The Doctor’s House, for letting me run this contest. They’re located just an hour outside St. John’s, with Aveda spa treatments and acres of gorgeous wooded trails and gardens, right on the ocean. I’ve been, and it’s breathtaking. Also, a big thank you to all who participated and entered the draw, and I hope Fiona truly enjoys her free night. I’ll try to do another fun contest soon, so stay tuned!

Open House on 93 Portugal Cove Road
This coming weekend, I’m happy to be hosting an Open House for this charming home on Portugal Cove Road. It has beautiful mature grounds with drive-in access to the detached single garage and an amazingly deep yard, right in the heart of the city. It’s really a remarkable space.

Win a Night at The Doctor’s House, courtesy of Mark Glynn Homes
So many of my clients are very hard-working people, and I know we could all use a bit of luxury now and then. That’s why I’m excited about my latest contest. I’ve partnered with The Doctor’s House Inn and Spa, offering a draw to win a night for two, with an ocean-front view and breakfast in the morning. This new, luxurious Tudor Inn and Spa is in Green’s Harbour, a little over an hour outside St. John’s. I’ve been there, and I know it will be a treat for whoever wins. They have acres of fields and gardens overlooking the ocean, an animal sanctuary with Newfoundland ponies, and a world-class spa.
I’m thrilled to be partnering with what is quickly becoming a must-see in Newfoundland, and I’m happy to offer this opportunity to my clients. If you’d like to enter the draw, it’s simple – please go to this link, and follow the instructions (you’ll need a Facebook account). Good luck!
Thank You, Easter Seals!
I just wanted to take a minute to thank Easter Seals Newfoundland and Labrador for their fantastic work, and to thank my family, friends, colleagues and clients who helped me raise money for their 3rd Annual Drop Zone. I was really excited for the chance to repel down Atlantic Place while raising funds for such a worthwhile cause. It was an incredible, fun experience, and it was great to contribute to this organization that works to smash barriers for children with physical disabilities and enhance their lives. I was one of 88 to take the challenge, and $97,000 in total was raised. It was a great day – thanks again to all who supported us and helped make it happen!
Open House in Portugal Cove
I’m excited to be showing this family home in Portugal Cove this weekend. It’s fully developed, only 10 years old, and it shows like new. With natural light, an open concept kitchen with oak cabinets, sit-up breakfast bar and stainless steel appliances, plus three bedrooms upstairs and two downstairs with a rec-room, this house has all the space a family needs. It’s on a large lot with two sheds, and is within walking distance to Murray’s Pond. Plus, the relocation company pays a $4000 cash-back on purchase!
