I’m always on the look-out for real estate news to pass onto my clients, so this story caught my eye. According to a recent survey, smoking inside your home can have a drastic impact on its selling price. The survey was done in Ontario, so I wonder what implications it would have on our market. But smoking there could reduce the resale value of the property by up to 29%, which translates to about $107,000 on the average home. That’s a lot of value lost!
Many respondents said that they’d be less likely to buy a home if people had smoked inside, and we all know it can be hard to get rid of that smell. So if you’re a homeowner looking to sell in the near future, I definitely think it’s something to keep in mind. Let me know in the comments – if you’re a smoker and a homeowner, do you smoke inside? If you’re a potential buyer, would knowing previous owners smoked inside turn you off the sale?
