The Gander River Fishing Lodge was built during the Smallwood era for the exclusive use of the premier, his cabinet ministers and their guests & is still referred to as ‘The Government Cabin’. Consisting of a 60x60 lodge and several outbuildings, it's Situated on a rocky outcrop where the river widens into Fourth Pond, the ideal location for a wilderness retreat! When first built the location was accessible only by boat from Glenwood, however, later the Wood’s Road was extended so you're able to drive a good deal closer, walk across some barrens and cut your boat ride in half. Today the Wood’s Road takes you to a point where it is only a 10-minute boat ride to the lodge. While this makes the lodge more easily accessible its privacy is still maintained. The property is also accessible by seaplane, helicopter, canoe and, in early spring, by skidoo or ATV. The lodge consists of a lofty lounge area with a huge 8’ wide fireplace, four guest rooms which accommodate eight guests, two bathrooms, a separate dining room, a large eat-in kitchen off which there is a bed and bath for the cook and a large tackle/utility room. Almost the entire single-story structure is surrounded by a continuous screened in porch. The front bedroom on the river side is still known as “Joey’s room”. Separate cabin, large wood shed, two well houses, a generator shed, a boat shed, a water shed, a storage shed, and a workshop. Current owners have either refurbished or completely rebuilt most of these outbuildings, replaced the entire firebox of the central fireplace, installed a new septic tank and raised and leveled the lodge. While most of the land on the river remains Crown land, it should be noted that when the current owners purchased the property, they gained title to it, making it one of the only freehold properties on the river.
